Conversation Starters for Speech & LanguageOh my goodness! What a busy year this is turning out to be. I'm not alone in that, right? I feel as though I barely have time to sit at a computer to get my school paperwork done, never mind create new materials. But, I did get into a creative mood the other night! I started looking at some clip-art I had purchased a while ago, but never did anything with and here's the result...<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr4wKw_u6_BfDkkWUJ5FvNZ_ek5NOKTctBsm09OUsfCALOh688Wa0MIwY1cmFMwb9d03Q0ylSDQ-ZSriliFYNB9kgsJU6AOsfjHk4hUlVul0I-b2IZlrja4YxcIlCQ3X1lbrZtJ7ISr5Qm/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr4wKw_u6_BfDkkWUJ5FvNZ_ek5NOKTctBsm09OUsfCALOh688Wa0MIwY1cmFMwb9d03Q0ylSDQ-ZSriliFYNB9kgsJU6AOsfjHk4hUlVul0I-b2IZlrja4YxcIlCQ3X1lbrZtJ7ISr5Qm/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had purchased some fairy tale clip-art from <a href="http://www.scrappindoodles.com/" target="_blank">Scrappin' Doodles</a> and thought to myself "What would happen if those fairy tales got mixed together (think the TV show "Once Upon a Time")? What would their conversations look/sound like? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Of course, as an SLP, I thought about the pragmatic implications of the conversations, but really there is so much more that could be targeted here! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
*Pragmatic language/Conversation skills<br />
*Perspective Taking<br />
*Grammar/Syntax/Semantics<br />
*Carry-over for articulation, voice, fluency<br />
*Narrative skills</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In this free download, there are several mixed-up story conversation starters. Read the situations on the cards and have students discuss how the conversation might continue. You could also discuss the appropriateness of the actions of the characters within each scene. Here's a sample scene:</div>

<br />
My buddy Shannon over at Speechy Musings is hosting a "Speech Room Staples" linky party! One of my goals for this school year is to get back to blogging and I figured this is the perfect opportunity for me to start up again. Check out her original post and some other link-ups <a href="http://speechymusings.com/2014/09/22/our-speech-room-staples-linky-party/" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Here are a few of my go-to favorite TPT purchases:<br />
<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Language-Progress-Monitoring-Tool-Lower-Level-for-Speech-Language-Therapy-1358098" target="_blank">Language Progress Monitoring Tool - Lower Level</a> by Natalie Snyders<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBKi_fJrjzrWGo2YfEuySqeWZU6Erw9drqV3YNFXb-IWrQxezK8u2qVHxkYezCpHZYpxPda1UovMjGlzFgAU9oV3cJnBOOIsuNur4qDygWJDWj7FK91sdmWfzunmpkcQW9nlckn0ar3cBX/s1600/lang+prog+monitor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBKi_fJrjzrWGo2YfEuySqeWZU6Erw9drqV3YNFXb-IWrQxezK8u2qVHxkYezCpHZYpxPda1UovMjGlzFgAU9oV3cJnBOOIsuNur4qDygWJDWj7FK91sdmWfzunmpkcQW9nlckn0ar3cBX/s1600/lang+prog+monitor.jpg" height="199" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
I really can't say enough about this. I've been using the overall screening portion included to gather baseline data on my language students. I love that it includes pretty much all of my most common IEP objectives as well...perfect for gathering information at progress report time!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
2. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Itty-Bitty-Books-for-Articulation-Practice-BUNDLE-complete-set-for-all-sounds-916543" target="_blank">Itty-Bitty Books for Articulation</a> by Schoolhouse Talk<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBRQMDayUB18sLAbfOIMFp_giVcr0wHNen-pdYLK5q8Y6flJW9Ry089zY-YfPOgUNUS_wqbvywRX070rXp4iuEdd3V09KwwLMRVakhaDAnBErL0eX2z8ERoIfCGxvOz0hWnfwah3eubJo_/s1600/bitty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBRQMDayUB18sLAbfOIMFp_giVcr0wHNen-pdYLK5q8Y6flJW9Ry089zY-YfPOgUNUS_wqbvywRX070rXp4iuEdd3V09KwwLMRVakhaDAnBErL0eX2z8ERoIfCGxvOz0hWnfwah3eubJo_/s1600/bitty.jpg" height="154" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
These are just great for a quick therapy activity when introducing a new sound or reviewing a mastered sound. If you're working in a group, you can focus on drill with one student at a time while the rest are coloring their pictures. They are perfect for home practice as well! <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Language-Dice-Black-White-Language-Games-624578" target="_blank">Language Dice</a> by The Buckeye Speech Path<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgan3rYxzLcjyejPBTcnX2pKukjksD3G0BQcru2t_rpKYkWEfPuViOXsZapCaU6Ktp-LoNVD681b69R96Mk6RaFM8Iux7HINsFaZ-tWSeMczAiuH_j7uG7-R0Imujd40B6DkM-9mtA7EhOC/s1600/bitty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgan3rYxzLcjyejPBTcnX2pKukjksD3G0BQcru2t_rpKYkWEfPuViOXsZapCaU6Ktp-LoNVD681b69R96Mk6RaFM8Iux7HINsFaZ-tWSeMczAiuH_j7uG7-R0Imujd40B6DkM-9mtA7EhOC/s1600/bitty.jpg" height="156" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
If you haven't noticed my theme here, most of my go-to activities are black and white. I'm splitting my time between two schools this year and I need to be highly portable! I love this language dice game for a few reasons, most notably that there are a ton of different targets. Also, I can snap a picture of a page using my iPad (or screenshot from DropBox) and open in the Doodle Buddy app. The students can mark off their items right on the iPad and I never needed to make a trip to the copy machine!<br />
<br />
<br />
4. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/No-Print-Bundle-Pack-883450" target="_blank">No Print Bundle Pack</a> by Nicole Allison<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWk40ESt6uD0cnUPVK9XrEBbL0VC9G2goNioDIJb68MU-mqVRzpeaibjsJP4IXOsb_tD94u62BTW-UW7h0wkN4eXTqmo6tPlgPe1cYK0WObWk2cT4O1Mp2WtwhvCZWQnj4Go1c-URCKe8z/s1600/bitty.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWk40ESt6uD0cnUPVK9XrEBbL0VC9G2goNioDIJb68MU-mqVRzpeaibjsJP4IXOsb_tD94u62BTW-UW7h0wkN4eXTqmo6tPlgPe1cYK0WObWk2cT4O1Mp2WtwhvCZWQnj4Go1c-URCKe8z/s1600/bitty.jpg" height="246" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
No-print/No-prep activities are a must for traveling therapists! I love the variety of activities in this bundle and the kids love that they can "play" on the iPad! <br />
<br />
<br />
I have a few go-to favorites from my own store as well. Here they are:<br />
<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasonal-Thematic-Dot-Reinforcers-912332" target="_blank">Seasonal & Thematic Dot Reinforcers</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9PAFSeCnoojGjNqCNX0Af5xjEy6wVzjqeQ1N2wnOIjYXbyydaaSmvtiBCSEwVSp7cK163GnU6uWYDQtg8JFFoZlY-rU3GsmzcHto25UECVvs8ovJuG8PUz21lAWwdtCeuo_kcfi6BE0Nm/s1600/cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9PAFSeCnoojGjNqCNX0Af5xjEy6wVzjqeQ1N2wnOIjYXbyydaaSmvtiBCSEwVSp7cK163GnU6uWYDQtg8JFFoZlY-rU3GsmzcHto25UECVvs8ovJuG8PUz21lAWwdtCeuo_kcfi6BE0Nm/s1600/cover.jpg" height="249" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I like these because I have two options...I can grab dot markers or stickers and use the black and white version. Or I can print/laminate the full color sheets and use my bingo chips and magnetic wand. The kids love these activities and I can use them with any target!<br />
<br />
<br />
2. Feed the Penguin Activities:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsb3_z4FYXCIlUyXQ9FAaCJDYAga6GKwcMYnd1B9lkvHsXtI_K4-hpdOdEOln4_L7lsNnw_ebpzj_Kqbimt_unq0QzJFX2WagYyl4nxuFFidsvuKMQB0aeiOJ1f1ZC8swPtQ4Z-tSVLlu/s1600/penguin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsb3_z4FYXCIlUyXQ9FAaCJDYAga6GKwcMYnd1B9lkvHsXtI_K4-hpdOdEOln4_L7lsNnw_ebpzj_Kqbimt_unq0QzJFX2WagYyl4nxuFFidsvuKMQB0aeiOJ1f1ZC8swPtQ4Z-tSVLlu/s1600/penguin.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I know this probably looks more seasonal than most of the others and you might be thinking, "How can a seasonal item be a speech room staple?" Well, kids just love to feed things! You can print different animals for the kids to feed (like the shark I printed to go with a fish/shark book):<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy2RpVePEHAwWI1XVgdDMogdHW4_0YjLh_jKNloiXaTH2VI-j22BZ484z5ASRJENHGc-F8xzwuFZhoJBTJGJOeT0RiMLdVM_ycuaQjc1DPAZCsBwNqjRHV0WFns4kBdNCyovJWX1cUyzco/s1600/shark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy2RpVePEHAwWI1XVgdDMogdHW4_0YjLh_jKNloiXaTH2VI-j22BZ484z5ASRJENHGc-F8xzwuFZhoJBTJGJOeT0RiMLdVM_ycuaQjc1DPAZCsBwNqjRHV0WFns4kBdNCyovJWX1cUyzco/s1600/shark.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I actually have three different Feed the Penguin Activities in my TPT store. Here are the links:<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Feed-the-Penguin-Bilabial-CV-CVC-CVCV-words-456747" target="_blank">Feed the Penguin: Bilabial CV, CVC, CVCV words</a> (FREEBIE)<br />
2. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Feed-the-Penguin-Articulation-Pack-465887" target="_blank">Feed the Penguin: Articulation Pack</a><br />
3. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Feed-the-Penguin-Language-Pack-465907" target="_blank">Feed the Penguin: Language Pack</a> (I also have a money saving bundle of the language and articulation packs, which can be found <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Feed-The-Penguin-Language-Articulation-Bundle-465938" target="_blank">HERE</a>).<br />
<br />
<br />
I hope you find this post helpful! What are your speech room staples? I'd love to hear from you!<br />

Hey Everyone!<br />
<br />
Time for my monthly (or so) check-in. ;) Boy have I been busy with <a href="http://cmanchester.jamberrynails.net/" target="_blank">Jamberry</a> work and end of the school year goings-on, but I wanted to share some fun books and another activity for those of you who are still in school or working summer school!<br />
<br />
Summer is a great time to play with Bubbles! I found these adorable books on Amazon and I've been using them in some of my sessions:<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=carsspecor-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=0547994834&asins=0547994834&linkId=&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe> <iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=carsspecor-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=0448413035&asins=0448413035&linkId=&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe> <iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ss&ref=ss_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=carsspecor-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=0516264737&asins=0516264737&linkId=&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;">
</iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
I've noticed that my students this year have really struggled with categories - especially naming a category when given members of the category. So, I developed this activity. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcbuK6kW536XUJyaTZqoYtLT0aJF4enrcGPAEs31QPliFfVnc08hGHDVaYVuovuvmhqmiy-bWDx4vciCwKfIDb91ecV1s_WYRK60hDxDtfaJUa7eMG7sxJNMH0l3Vqd13_dm5gT5boreU/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizcbuK6kW536XUJyaTZqoYtLT0aJF4enrcGPAEs31QPliFfVnc08hGHDVaYVuovuvmhqmiy-bWDx4vciCwKfIDb91ecV1s_WYRK60hDxDtfaJUa7eMG7sxJNMH0l3Vqd13_dm5gT5boreU/s1600/Slide1.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are bubble wand cards that each have 3 category members each:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMeGc3CLFnxxMUzuEm_zbeZpw3cBXAJkPh0XpImMxmqelZ5a5cLVLTQQ_TwUQgz5R9F13Q626ck72m315sj0hquzCGwon_gUyV52QZ0MET4CUDjoKPHKLYP5nUHuDcSt6i5AwQWqG_1MPF/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMeGc3CLFnxxMUzuEm_zbeZpw3cBXAJkPh0XpImMxmqelZ5a5cLVLTQQ_TwUQgz5R9F13Q626ck72m315sj0hquzCGwon_gUyV52QZ0MET4CUDjoKPHKLYP5nUHuDcSt6i5AwQWqG_1MPF/s1600/Slide3.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then there are bubble container cards with a category name:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjntIRzfUqkeMarsRHL5cF_B18TrDJVWNFmsCtnpxEobRIt1WFHIl4iyNzCB4Np51WDXr89VUnpLoTGpzin1ASwaCB9bOXfqD57-Fr7ElXOZS_neGw7bYNpu2kL7ldw5Z15V3LK_cIpRBO7/s1600/Slide7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjntIRzfUqkeMarsRHL5cF_B18TrDJVWNFmsCtnpxEobRIt1WFHIl4iyNzCB4Np51WDXr89VUnpLoTGpzin1ASwaCB9bOXfqD57-Fr7ElXOZS_neGw7bYNpu2kL7ldw5Z15V3LK_cIpRBO7/s1600/Slide7.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are a few different ways you can use this activity.<br />
<br />
<ol>
<li>First, you can use the bubble wand cards separately. Shuffle and have students draw a card. They can read the three members and try to come up with the category.</li>
<li>You could also use the bubble container cards separately. Shuffle and have students draw a card. They can read the category name and try to name a specified number of members.</li>
<li>Another way to use the bubble container cards would be to divide students into teams. One card is drawn and teams take turns naming a member of the category until one team can no longer think of a member. Once that happens, the other team gets the point.</li>
<li>Use both sets of cards together, mix them up and play a Memory Game.</li>

<br />
Hi everyone!<br />
<br />
Did you happen to catch the Acorn Roll & Color that I posted in the fall? Well, one of the teachers in my school loved it so much that she asked me to create an Easter Version!<br />
<br />
Here it is:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifPNj8HRVBzh6sQMlAJlmpr3cYMjxQ6UrMxfY8XpeLmFeNuxNB56EV7ErdGkZEG6nmkG47bSW7RB5AGGQAP_wEGnokxFg45SSZ64iDF7XjtOLmlPVKb1OgdGytKbY2Yr5mb1C7OEF5PVS4/s1600/Easter+Roll+cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifPNj8HRVBzh6sQMlAJlmpr3cYMjxQ6UrMxfY8XpeLmFeNuxNB56EV7ErdGkZEG6nmkG47bSW7RB5AGGQAP_wEGnokxFg45SSZ64iDF7XjtOLmlPVKb1OgdGytKbY2Yr5mb1C7OEF5PVS4/s1600/Easter+Roll+cover.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm using this activity along with the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0545002362/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0545002362&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Easter Eggs Everywhere!</a> by Steve Metzger in my language groups. I love that I can use roll and colors to target a variety of objectives!<br />
<br />
You can grab a copy of this freebie <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76237240/Easter%20Roll%20and%20Cover.pdf" target="_blank">HERE</a>. Let me know what you think about Roll and Color worksheets. Would you like to see more?<br />

Yup, we do, and $2 from every sale goes to the Autism Society of America! I'm raffling off a half-sheet of these <a href="http://cmanchester.jamberrynails.net/product/autism-awareness#.U0H89PldWSo" target="_blank">Autism Awareness</a> wraps (9 wraps total, enough for a full manicure and possibly a full pedicure too)! <br />

Long time, no see!! I feel like I'm so out of the blog loop lately! I've been busy at work and at home and I just have to say that I'm so grateful that other bloggers have been creating some amazing materials to make my planning life so much easier! I've been ALL about the no-print and no-color-ink products that my bloggy buddies have created! They've made my life so much easier! <br />
<br />
I'm starting to plan for the spring now and I wanted to share some print and go worksheets I made for mixed groups!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgRPh8-HrY_62j7TdVdZHDtWiJbPTCD1I2ktox7ydvyE22Wp6dF4_U3irpsSRwWxnQlzkCFGby15Q74w9KRorAvYTZxASRYv6yzpYwlNiCIqW1Xl9qOltWz5w9hLNRjvtLdiCP_2zrA21/s1600/Slide1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgRPh8-HrY_62j7TdVdZHDtWiJbPTCD1I2ktox7ydvyE22Wp6dF4_U3irpsSRwWxnQlzkCFGby15Q74w9KRorAvYTZxASRYv6yzpYwlNiCIqW1Xl9qOltWz5w9hLNRjvtLdiCP_2zrA21/s1600/Slide1.PNG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
There are three different worksheets that are designed to be used with various targets and in mixed groups. There are 6 spaces on which to write targets for the student. Students will roll a die and complete the task on the corresponding line (e.g., say a target word, provide a definition, provide a synonym, etc.). If correct, they can color a portion of the picture that corresponds to the number they rolled.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
Each of the three worksheets has a different level of difficulty. The Easter Egg Sheet has one space to color per number/target:<span style="font-family: FontTree; font-size: 18pt; text-align: center;"> </span></div>

The Easter Basket has 5 spaces per number/target:<br />

I’ve done a few posts now where I’ve mentioned my student learning goal and professional practice goals for the Educator Evaluation that many districts have adopted. A decent number of people have asked me to share some information regarding my SLG and PPG. Last year was the first year my district used this evaluation method. In effort to stagger plans, some of us were to develop 1-year plans and others developed 2-year plans. I was on the one-year plan. This is good for you because I’ve now had to write TWO plans!</div>
<br />
If you’re new to my page, I just want you to be aware that the majority of my caseload consists of preschool students. Because of that, you might not choose to work on the same goals, but they should give you an idea for your own goals!<br />

<br /></div>
For the 2012-2013 school year, I had a number of preschool students who had significantly reduced Mean Length of Utterance (MLU). I decided to select a cohort of students who had an MLU of less than or equal to 2.0 for my SLG. I'm not sure if other districts have the same type of plan, but we are required to submit our SLG and PLG for approval, then create a plan that includes action steps. This is a basic outline of that plan. The "due dates" of the steps are included in parenthesis.<br />
<br />
<h4>
<b><i>Student Learning Goal:</i></b></h4>
By June 2013, 80% of an identified cohort of students with a BOY Mean Length of Utterance in Morphemes (MLU-M) of less than or equal to 2.0 will increase their MLU-M to 3.5 or greater as measured by language sampling.<br />
<br />
<div>
<b><i>Action Steps:</i></b><br />
<br />
1. Obtain language samples and calculate BOY MLU (By 9/30/12). </div>
<div>
*BOY = Beginning Of Year</div>
<div>
<br />
2. Identify cohort of students with MLU of less than or equal to 2.0 (By 10/30/12)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Implement activities to target the following morphological structures/sentence types: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
a. Plural -s (by 12/31/12 )<br />
b. Subject-Verb (by 1/31/13)<br />
c. Subject-Verb-Object (by 3/31/13)<br />
d.Prepositional Phrases (by 5/31/13)</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
4. To demonstrate effectiveness, by Progress Reporting Period 2 (March 2013), 80% of students in the cohort should see an increase in MLU to 2.75 or greater. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5. For each student in the established cohort, I will provide home activities for parents to complete to facilitate carry-over of skills at least 4x/student during the 2012-2013 school year. <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
*2 activities sent by 2/28/13<br />
*1 activity sent by 4/30/13<br />
*1 activity sent by 6/20/13 </blockquote>
</div>
<div>
<h4>
<b><i>Professional Practice Goal:</i></b></h4>
I will increase my content knowledge of Evidence Based Practice in the area of increasing MLU in preschool students by researching methods and establishing 4 different activities based on those methods by June 2013.<br />
<br />
<b><i>Action Steps:</i></b><br />
<br />
1. Research evidence-based instructional strategies that target increasing MLU in preschool-aged students. Identify a minimum of two instructional strategies for use in therapy. <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
*By 12/31/12, search the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s online database for articles related to preschool MLU.<br />
*By 2/28/13, compile binder of resources for increasing preschool MLU containing at least 5 articles from journals or websites. </blockquote>
2. Develop/create activities to target the following morphological structures/sentence types: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
a. Plural -s (by 12/31/12)<br />
b. Subject-Verb (by 1/31/13)<br />
c. Subject-Verb-Object (3/31/13)<br />
d. Prepositional Phrases (5/31/13)</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
3. Research/trial at least 5 different iPad applications that are designed to (or can be adapted to) target morphology/sentence structure using the FIVES criteria. <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
*2 apps by 2/28/13<br />
*2 apps by 4/30/13<br />
*1 app by 5/31/13</blockquote>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm on a 2-year plan now, so my timelines will look a little bit different. However, my caseload does change every year, so I wanted to reflect that! For this go-around, I chose a cohort of students on an IEP for language delays/disorders (e.g., NOT articulation). I also selected students in the 4-year old program that will be going to kindergarten in the next school year.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<h4>
<b><i>Student Learning Goal:</i></b></h4>
By the end of each academic year, 75% of students in an identified cohort (language delayed/disordered students in the 4-year old preschool program) will demonstrate an increase in vocabulary and describing skills (using the Expanding Expression Tool) to be able to state 5 or more attributes/features of 6 pictured objects.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>Action Steps:</i></b><br />
1. Identify cohort of students. (By 11/27/13) </div>
<div>
*We had a late start getting our plans in this year!<br />
<br />
2. Obtain baseline data through the informal assessment (students will name and identify characteristics of 6 familiar objects presented in pictures) (By 11/27/13 )<br />
<br />
3. Become familiar with the Expanding Expression Tool by reviewing manual (Ongoing)<br />
<br />
4. Implement activities to target the individual beads on the EET strand: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
a. Green (by 12/31/13)<br />
b. Blue (by 1/31/14)<br />
c. Eye (by 3/31/14)<br />
d. Wood (6/20/14)<br />
e. Pink (1/31/15)<br />
f. White (6/20/15)</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
5. To demonstrate effectiveness, by Progress Reporting Period 3 (June 2014), 75% of students in the cohort should be able to state 3 or more attributes/features of 6 pictured objects. <br />
*Obtain informal assessments 4x/year (BOY, Progress Report 1, Progress Report 2, EOY). <br />
<br />
<h4>
<b><i>Professional Practice Goal:</i></b></h4>
I will increase my content knowledge of Evidence Based Practice in the area of vocabulary skills in preschool students by researching developmental norms and the Expanding Expression Tool (EET), as well as creating/finding and implementing 6 different activities related to the beads on the EET strand by June 2015.<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><i>Action Steps:</i></b><br />
<br />
1. Research evidence-based instructional strategies that target vocabulary development in preschool-aged students, including the Expanding Expression Tool. <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
*By 12/31/13, search the American Speech-Language Hearing Association’s online database for articles related to preschool vocabulary development.<br />
*By 6/19/14, compile binder of resources for increasing preschool vocabulary containing at least 5 articles from journals or websites.</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
2. Develop/identify activities to target the individual beads on the EET strand: <br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
a. Green (by by 12/31/13)<br />
b. Blue (by 1/31/14)<br />
c. Eye (by 3/31/14)<br />
d. Wood (by 6/20/14)<br />
e. Pink (by 1/31/15)<br />
f. White (by 6/20/15)</blockquote>
</div>
<div>
<br />
<b><i>Freebie Alert:</i></b><br />
The informal assessment sheets I am using to track student performance can be downloaded as a freebie <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76237240/EET%20Informal%20Assessment%20Sheets.pdf" target="_blank">HERE</a>. My plan is to have students describe 6 different objects 4x in the year...Beginning of the Year (BOY), Progress Report 1 (PR1), Progress Report 2 (PR2), and End of the Year (EOY). My plan is to repeat the first 6 words at the end of the year to get a good estimate of progress. My prompt is "Tell me everything you know about a ___" and I give the student the EET strand. The sheets look like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVUOYBtnv5Oy7YyD8U8P-t4kwA0m8HetLbNpfA2_M9TqdruV2QOWdC8g0ybSzmOeW524T2W5WICFWrG0bfV6xMqiBZfYUC94dv2NrofsYJlRb_YtI-hmmx4n6vmaJRKAbD7H-9gEMPPTT/s1600/EET+Informal+Assessment+Sheets.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEVUOYBtnv5Oy7YyD8U8P-t4kwA0m8HetLbNpfA2_M9TqdruV2QOWdC8g0ybSzmOeW524T2W5WICFWrG0bfV6xMqiBZfYUC94dv2NrofsYJlRb_YtI-hmmx4n6vmaJRKAbD7H-9gEMPPTT/s1600/EET+Informal+Assessment+Sheets.png" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
For those of you who are new to the evaluation system, I hope this information is helpful! I think once you have one evaluation cycle "under your belt," it will be easier to write and implement new plans! <br />
<div>

I'm curious...Is your district following this evaluation system or are you doing something different? If you are doing a similar evaluation system, what are your SLGs and PPGs?</div>

<i><br /></i>
It feels like FOREVER since I've actually had the chance to sit down and share with you what I've been doing in my speech room! Before Christmas, my son came home telling me about a book that his preschool teacher read to him. It sounded fun! The next week, a co-worker had it out in her pile of <i>snow</i> themed books and I had to check it out. <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0761457119/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0761457119&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Sneezy the Snowman</a> is now one of my <u>all-time favorite</u> snowman books!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggdj5BYwI8CPOSBrqFR6tgnfkXJ6nOr_oR8YzNqw0ADBgh8TrAsU9lbIwxlTmT_5eKPpIQm6H4nYPB-FE6FOYT2o8OVyNt8q9a150-UvbjUx8FfG8xTCuo1UBWmaFA-GN3zvgGaQBKSuLJ/s1600/z1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggdj5BYwI8CPOSBrqFR6tgnfkXJ6nOr_oR8YzNqw0ADBgh8TrAsU9lbIwxlTmT_5eKPpIQm6H4nYPB-FE6FOYT2o8OVyNt8q9a150-UvbjUx8FfG8xTCuo1UBWmaFA-GN3zvgGaQBKSuLJ/s1600/z1.jpg" height="320" width="257" /></a></div>
<br />
I encourage you to head over to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0761457119/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0761457119&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20" target="_blank">Amazon</a> and use the "look inside" feature. You won't be disappointed! In the story, Sneezy keeps looking for things to make him less cold. The first thing he does is drink hot cocoa. Many of my students can relate this...it <i>is</i> a fairly common activity post-snow play! If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed that we used <a href="http://busybeespeech.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-thank-you-freebie.html" target="_blank">Hot Cocoa Speech</a> (a very fun freebie) by Lauren over at <a href="http://busybeespeech.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Busy Bee Speech</a>:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghTzorlggwmBMAPjyTD7HIQNRXNYf00KVIiJYwhIAkCVaUOn_uVMUjdNKPwzWchTfKo2EuF4cHqzRPg3x-f1QgfOL3P_VM5rLXW1WHRCYZfHcxpkvuHNxaTX4h98hVe-BWzUNzNpfRDA3F/s1600/z4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghTzorlggwmBMAPjyTD7HIQNRXNYf00KVIiJYwhIAkCVaUOn_uVMUjdNKPwzWchTfKo2EuF4cHqzRPg3x-f1QgfOL3P_VM5rLXW1WHRCYZfHcxpkvuHNxaTX4h98hVe-BWzUNzNpfRDA3F/s1600/z4.jpg" height="320" width="241" /></a></div>
<br />
I used cotton balls because we're not supposed to give food to students...well, technically there is a loophole. A permission slip must be signed by the parent of EVERY student in the group. It just so happens that one of the teachers with whom I work had already sent home a permission slip for marshmallows! So, after reading the story to that class, we discussed ways to warm up and what we like to eat with our hot cocoa. The kids made this craft (the pattern is from Mailbox Magazine) to bring home: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg339yObIj_Mt09Y0iq5qBQb_L8jwElDgElC9xZabZyYQ4LBDV-5BzIR2CdzYrjaEBBH1KYXoOVHzV_P-xWRjgFQY_9J4E9taqLvNHS8COXLafId9Ew4JVGaDKgXkl7ybxyJ8TQu0QxUBTq/s1600/z2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg339yObIj_Mt09Y0iq5qBQb_L8jwElDgElC9xZabZyYQ4LBDV-5BzIR2CdzYrjaEBBH1KYXoOVHzV_P-xWRjgFQY_9J4E9taqLvNHS8COXLafId9Ew4JVGaDKgXkl7ybxyJ8TQu0QxUBTq/s1600/z2.jpg" height="236" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Every January, I target /s/ blends with my articulation students. Why January? Well, it's the perfect opportunity to target the sound in a naturalistic way! There are just about 100 ready-to-go target words! Here are just a few: snow, snowman, snowball, skate, scarf, sled, slide, slip, slippery, skid...You get the idea! So, with my articulation groups, we made this snowman craftivity:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHI5fqr_ms82YzLadQLW2Y2DCpq8BvoYScNMez1lGvmMM2_0NbyG9fOmYHwxFeKHvYx49k1Q9x2OAMwtGtC_zGnxyf7sepQMpb94vIfa-zUWGhpuoYQwlv5dkDznvy9aOeEQ1rZlbuCYk/s1600/z3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoHI5fqr_ms82YzLadQLW2Y2DCpq8BvoYScNMez1lGvmMM2_0NbyG9fOmYHwxFeKHvYx49k1Q9x2OAMwtGtC_zGnxyf7sepQMpb94vIfa-zUWGhpuoYQwlv5dkDznvy9aOeEQ1rZlbuCYk/s1600/z3.jpg" height="320" width="249" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i>
For the snowman, I used a printable page from <a href="http://tales-of-a-first-grade-teacher.blogspot.com/2012/11/snowman-glyph-freebie.html" target="_blank">Tales of a First Grade Teacher</a>. I got the photos from <a href="http://www.superduperinc.com/products/view.aspx?pid=bk232#.Uu-eLD1hw8w" target="_blank">Phonology Roundup</a> by Super Duper (I got the book that comes with a CD ROM). I printed 2 pages per sheet of paper so the pictures would be smaller. We glued the target words on and, in some cases, added some bonus words (sticks, snowflakes, scarf)!<br />
<br />
And that pretty much sums up my week last week! I'd love to hear from you. Have you read "Sneezy the Snowman"? If so, what do you think of it?<br />

This year the majority of my 3-year old articulation students have a little final consonant deletion going on. Not surprising, I know. Well, I've been plugging away at getting them to mark those final consonants and they're doing great! Next step? I pulled out the FCD story from <a href="http://www.superduperinc.com/products/view.aspx?pid=BK235&s=read-aloud-minimal-contrast-stories-with-activities-book#.Utw-NBAo51s" target="_blank">Read Aloud Minimal Contrast Stories With Activities</a> from Super Duper. This one is about a monkey who finds all sorts of strange things in her mailbox. I got the story printed for my group and grabbed some markers. And then it occurred to me...Hey! I have a monkey! I got him with my <a href="http://www.talkitrockit.com/" target="_blank">Talk it, Rock it</a> (formerly Kids Express Train) CDs. Wait a minute! I also have a mailbox! (Thanks Target Dollar Spot!) My kids had a blast making the monkey look in the mailbox for their target words! </div>

If you follow me on <a href="http://instagram.com/carriesspeechcorner" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, you may have noticed this! :) Have you heard of them? Jamberry wraps are heat activated vinyl wraps that adhere to your fingernails (as well as gel, acrylic, shellac, etc.) and last on your fingernails for up to 2 weeks and your toenails for up to 6 weeks! They do not chip like polish and there's no drying time! Did you notice I said "heat activated"?? Here's the official <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaykpuMe53w" target="_blank">Jamberry Application Video</a>. FYI, I skip the cuticle oil. I found that my nails started to lift at the cuticles the one time I did use it. I also do a slightly different removal process (see below).<br />
<br />
This was my first attempt at applying them:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhs4MSKe20teomZii4FYCT2WCW8kfcoGyAkPRCWEO1ky-gvmWsdrT8vxQBkY8K55PeXktblkIJI5QbmEVePn9dVwhLnP4b1GbdQdyNq7SAHM5bJGa3YBbhYhNZmLdRa-EokNBZdLb260J1/s1600/Raspberry+Sparkle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhs4MSKe20teomZii4FYCT2WCW8kfcoGyAkPRCWEO1ky-gvmWsdrT8vxQBkY8K55PeXktblkIJI5QbmEVePn9dVwhLnP4b1GbdQdyNq7SAHM5bJGa3YBbhYhNZmLdRa-EokNBZdLb260J1/s1600/Raspberry+Sparkle.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Way neater than I ever could have done with polish! BTW, I almost NEVER polish my nails! I'm just terrible at it! Also, when I was little, I used to bite my fingernails. My mother told me "If you bite your nails, they'll never grow long!" So, I started biting/picking at my cuticles instead, lol! This is a horrible habit to have and nail polish remover is just plain painful! Anywho, I've tried nail "stickers" before, but none have lasted as long as the Jamberries! <br />
<br />
This is the next wrap I chose, just in time for the holidays! How cute are the candy canes???<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioDlnPpATVUn7S3Or0navstdxiqugD3EvLp-exNoYeXbJtCHU-1mpGqHTYWFw43EZ_guxWx0L6nMBPLToSWbGk5BhOPg2umtqUr_MTHWASqY53z12_kVz1RkxFcAfG0iImeQJh33ez_9DE/s1600/Candy+Cane2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioDlnPpATVUn7S3Or0navstdxiqugD3EvLp-exNoYeXbJtCHU-1mpGqHTYWFw43EZ_guxWx0L6nMBPLToSWbGk5BhOPg2umtqUr_MTHWASqY53z12_kVz1RkxFcAfG0iImeQJh33ez_9DE/s1600/Candy+Cane2.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I loved these so much, I did them twice! Here's the 2nd set on day 14, and after I broke 2 nails cleaning the house:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfn_6KyQbB0M9ycUTMnoLZbfEa4x7OK2frDbeLFm8YgmxXhnJXMuCOcQBJytiWIbjf5idhQirzJ-AqhCPn-OXmb7_kQylexyZTS6jVqXQVeFJT71_kjoJyPBsVFaSas2FVWx0ODFwNF3Z8/s1600/Candy+Canes+Day+14+w+2+broken+nails.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfn_6KyQbB0M9ycUTMnoLZbfEa4x7OK2frDbeLFm8YgmxXhnJXMuCOcQBJytiWIbjf5idhQirzJ-AqhCPn-OXmb7_kQylexyZTS6jVqXQVeFJT71_kjoJyPBsVFaSas2FVWx0ODFwNF3Z8/s1600/Candy+Canes+Day+14+w+2+broken+nails.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Not bad, huh? You can see some nail growth, but they still look awesome! On day 14, though, I was hosting a demo at my house and wanted to show my guests how I remove my "jams." I don't have pictures, but basically I dip my fingertips in a small bowl of olive oil (about 1 1/2 - 2 Tbsp) and work the oil under the wrap from the cuticle to the tip. No Chemicals! I totally love that! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3U5DFQCN2mtvn6RWmwkW39jSEbrakoUBwhnmybOZnLNgP4WgLLK48DqLP22nG2B35xQI79L5keAIGCj3BRh1vde_u-MmaBMsvHVME1GwjofCfbcqire9d8bRGEBGhs9swpTU58vgUMEY1/s1600/1517682_714240985254224_1311393314_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3U5DFQCN2mtvn6RWmwkW39jSEbrakoUBwhnmybOZnLNgP4WgLLK48DqLP22nG2B35xQI79L5keAIGCj3BRh1vde_u-MmaBMsvHVME1GwjofCfbcqire9d8bRGEBGhs9swpTU58vgUMEY1/s1600/1517682_714240985254224_1311393314_n.jpg" height="247" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This "Jamicure" has been on my hands for about a week now. I'm not typically one to "mix-and-match" patterns, but I really like this combination!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYUQTk7b0_2In4O7EYwxN8Ulg-a0rUWBWMWHBRigB-_ie2KOlBS306TTWMGyMQJBC08qYm56D9eg0Tq6kmuH_IcYNf6kSSOcFUSMUdf-X2UToJ_m0_cfTJ3g5K-chCSQKYLanRSnPh4Sri/s1600/Gray+and+White+Polka+with+Wisteria+Accent.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYUQTk7b0_2In4O7EYwxN8Ulg-a0rUWBWMWHBRigB-_ie2KOlBS306TTWMGyMQJBC08qYm56D9eg0Tq6kmuH_IcYNf6kSSOcFUSMUdf-X2UToJ_m0_cfTJ3g5K-chCSQKYLanRSnPh4Sri/s1600/Gray+and+White+Polka+with+Wisteria+Accent.jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have to add something speech related to this post...My preschoolers love the patterns! They've been a conversation starter since I've started wearing them. Some of my kids are even paying more attention when I point to things, lol!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So why am I telling you about Jamberry? Well, I love them so much, I decided to become a consultant! I started this blog and my TPT store, not as a way to make money, but as a way to share my ideas with the rest of you. I have been SOOO fortunate to make a little bit of money from my TPT store and I am unbelievably thankful to each of you who has made purchases! A few years ago, my husband went back to school. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The short version of a long story is that, to supplement our income while he's in school, I have been thinking about joining a direct sales company (e.g., Pampered Chef, Thirty-One) for a while now and along came Jamberry! Talk about right place, right time! I can host virtual Jamberry parties right on Facebook with my son in the same room! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you're interested in hosting a party right on Facebook, January is the perfect time to do so! Check out the AWESOME bonus hostess rewards for January! I still have a few spots left, so email me if you're interested (I'm using cmanchester1@yahoo.com for Jamberry related emails)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
BRRR! It's been so cold all over the country this week that I bet even in the south kids are wearing winter clothing they've never seen before! This week in my speech room, we've been doing activities related to MITTENS! Here's the run-down:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><i>The Mitten:</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In many of my groups, we read "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0399231099/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0399231099&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">The Mitten</a>" by Jan Brett. Who doesn't love this book?!? Believe it or not, I drew the animals from the story when I was in college (in the mid to late 90's) and they are STILL hanging in there! This still shocks me because I didn't even think of laminating them at the time! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSd50IJyAZOJC1DhvoXfAVX_h7Crrsfa5xmf70iHrDyCNsVpF5yRp0kQ6trqOv2LV7sY_CT-tHuvORA_1slTtRyoKA_GlWQ49Syb1b-FRnpSFFxT980x4KvZ0L2n022D6s3eDCoPvZSaru/s1600/Mitten3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSd50IJyAZOJC1DhvoXfAVX_h7Crrsfa5xmf70iHrDyCNsVpF5yRp0kQ6trqOv2LV7sY_CT-tHuvORA_1slTtRyoKA_GlWQ49Syb1b-FRnpSFFxT980x4KvZ0L2n022D6s3eDCoPvZSaru/s1600/Mitten3.jpg" height="293" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a closer look:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp1npcL_fNQ_nMSx66jVQw60LW2bJaFL4bM44ODGHO9ujxyasJcK0b2ABs3a8lzo3HGp3XjUA-GNOuNcx3czH4RcokPeifgKNJ8RCz8HtXtGO5PfwDQ_93RI9facab7Dv8pTIEYrQy7c0g/s1600/Mitten.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp1npcL_fNQ_nMSx66jVQw60LW2bJaFL4bM44ODGHO9ujxyasJcK0b2ABs3a8lzo3HGp3XjUA-GNOuNcx3czH4RcokPeifgKNJ8RCz8HtXtGO5PfwDQ_93RI9facab7Dv8pTIEYrQy7c0g/s1600/Mitten.jpg" height="313" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We worked on sequencing the order in which the animals went into the mitten and I found this printable emergent reader take-home book from <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/The-Mitten-Emergent-Reader-192270" target="_blank">Jamie Mayas on Teacher's Pay Teachers</a>. What a great way for my preschoolers to practice the vocabulary from the book!<br />
<br />
<b><i>Noisy Story:</i></b><br />
In some other groups, we read the Noisy Story "The Mitten." (Click <a href="http://carriesspeechcorner.blogspot.com/2013/01/noisy-stories-and-some-aac.html" target="_blank">HERE</a> to see more information on the Noisy Stories program). This story is about a lost mitten. I begin the story by wearing one mitten and telling the kids that I'm going to tell them a story about something you can wear in the winter. Believe it or not, they don't ALL clue in that the story will be about a mitten! Once they do figure it out, I tell them that there is a BIG problem in the story (mind you, I'm still wearing ONE mitten). Eventually someone infers that there is a missing or lost mitten in the story...<br />

<br />
At the end, the mitten is found on a snowman! My preschoolers love when I pull out my snowman (above) with the mitten stuck to his belly. (Sometimes they make me feel like a magician!) The younger kids worked on same/different using real mittens (see photo below) as well. <br />
<br />
PS, If you want a similar type story for older kids, check out "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0142301922/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0142301922&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">The Missing Mitten Mystery</a>" by Steven Kellogg.<br />
<br />
<b><i>EET: Mitten style!</i></b><br />
<br />
I have rounded up a ton of mittens over the years. I usually pick them up at the end of the winter in a clearance bin. We focused on the "eye" bead of the EET strand and described what the mittens look like. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio3xFSR_a-VB3HHyYFIbwzPxucgehRIkyiXpKmDUPfcMWuIK5MvlxD_pdZGR-w3Px-FoWPyAfad7Pb0NEKuvNzKZ9B-6wr2rAy9HDp9bsY-PZwRUeuSSpV-2v_UhzEjk1gOBD5jdrPsF79/s1600/Mitten4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio3xFSR_a-VB3HHyYFIbwzPxucgehRIkyiXpKmDUPfcMWuIK5MvlxD_pdZGR-w3Px-FoWPyAfad7Pb0NEKuvNzKZ9B-6wr2rAy9HDp9bsY-PZwRUeuSSpV-2v_UhzEjk1gOBD5jdrPsF79/s1600/Mitten4.jpg" height="308" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know if I mentioned this before or not, but I'm doing my Student Learning Goal for my Educator Evaluation on the EET. Based on my mid-year data, my kids are just NOT getting the eye bead! Here's an example of a very typical response from my kiddos during mid-year data collection:</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<b>Me:</b> What's this?<br />
<b>Student:</b> A carrot.<br />
<b>Me:</b> Right! {shows green bead}Green-group. What group does a carrot belong in?<br />
<b>Student:</b> Food group.<br />
<b>Me:</b> Nice! {shows blue bead}Blue-do. What do you do with a carrot?<br />
<b>Student: </b>You eat it!<br />
<b>Me:</b> You're doing great! {shows eye bead} Eye ball! What does a carrot look like?<br />
<b>Student: </b> It looks like a carrot!<br />
<b>Me:</b> {face-palm!}</blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We spent about 2 weeks on describing appearance, but I guess we need some more time with that! So, we grabbed the EET strand and worked on describing the appearance of the mittens. If you don't have a ton of mittens like I do, you can always make them out of paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Throughout the year and half that I've been blogging, I've made some pretty amazing friends along the way! When I started this journey, my main goal was to "give back" to the field. I've found and used some awesome materials that have made my practice more fun and my planning much easier and I wanted to do the same for other SLPs. I never would have imagined how close I would have become to other SLP bloggers, but I'm happy to count so many of them as friends!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In fact, a few of us got together and decided to do a Secret Santa gift exchange! My Secret Santa was Maureen from <a href="http://www.thespeechbubbleslp.com/" target="_blank">The Speech Bubble</a>! Here's what I got:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJay0jBj7aeQ9Xif6y0bJTMLuoMy150mMU9IIpm0QChoA1QoylcSeJgMEusirb_a_ogNKq89QG-vnTRVBwonWDSv9QwCuTqocA08_VEU0Gddd8qfG8Yt1wYqaqPrfrJzaQe5bCgyBTpgg5/s1600/Santa2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJay0jBj7aeQ9Xif6y0bJTMLuoMy150mMU9IIpm0QChoA1QoylcSeJgMEusirb_a_ogNKq89QG-vnTRVBwonWDSv9QwCuTqocA08_VEU0Gddd8qfG8Yt1wYqaqPrfrJzaQe5bCgyBTpgg5/s320/Santa2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A gift set from Crabtree & Evelyn in one of my all-time favorite scents - Pomegranate! And...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCtGBQWAfZH9eUIap8sLzgyxvV7jRcXfi4lxJSKab4BG08UFbVTqu0n7yhZVFBJ7bJss5p8Xkn_p7VFN3OIKwdH0EEwMe2Wa3Rvrbid-qlNrflYwU4FgO8U4lrZ3ciaaIHMXOhVJLVWjsO/s1600/Santa1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCtGBQWAfZH9eUIap8sLzgyxvV7jRcXfi4lxJSKab4BG08UFbVTqu0n7yhZVFBJ7bJss5p8Xkn_p7VFN3OIKwdH0EEwMe2Wa3Rvrbid-qlNrflYwU4FgO8U4lrZ3ciaaIHMXOhVJLVWjsO/s320/Santa1.jpg" width="285" /></a></div>
<br />
...How cute is this SLP wreath?!?! I've seen burlap wreath tutorials on Pinterest and have always wanted to do one! I was so excited to see how this one made by my crafty Secret Santa came out! I'm definitely taking this one to work, but I may just need to try to make one for home!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Thank you so much Maureen! I LOVE my gifts!!! <3<br />
<br />
I had Jessica from <a href="http://consonantlyspeaking.com/" target="_blank">Consonantly Speaking</a>. If you don't know Jessica, she is a HUGE Lego fan and she's getting married soon! I found these cute Wedding <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005XDHNF4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005XDHNF4&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Legos</a> at Amazon and I thought she and her fiance would get a kick out of them! While searching Amazon, I came across these <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WK25RO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005WK25RO&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Speech-ified Legos</a> that I thought were pretty fun too! <br />
<br />

Happy New Year! </div>
<br />
I hope everyone had a fantastic ending of 2013 and I wish you nothing but wonderful things for 2014! If you are back to work this week and need something quick to do with your kiddos, here's a simple worksheet...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Jd7EUJhJI21dhi5G0R2OvWEYJjvPbQfNwiQ8JXD2SLo2T9O1miHHZsCCqZW1V_272QZtUMVlBlPQBtTRmyu5DoLdKb_bNpvNkfxGhj8NEXcBGBN_VW2usN95PCTbaMlQBDlO6pcxmOu1/s1600/favorite+gift.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8Jd7EUJhJI21dhi5G0R2OvWEYJjvPbQfNwiQ8JXD2SLo2T9O1miHHZsCCqZW1V_272QZtUMVlBlPQBtTRmyu5DoLdKb_bNpvNkfxGhj8NEXcBGBN_VW2usN95PCTbaMlQBDlO6pcxmOu1/s320/favorite+gift.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
First we talked about our time away from school and I asked the kids to tell me about their Christmas (for the ones who celebrate). Inevitably, this lead to a discussion about their presents, so I had each child tell me about their favorite gift and the reasons they liked the gift. Finally, they drew a picture of the gift.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjouUOYdSpg3sQYPdsVdcrYRO5-uo631KYnjvkRfUPBOXmTUFYeQqcDdBdZVxXG1tS2FcsMdsJL9YW0tv3Xav3G2wWb7IhzInHjq1V-aBlrNpdfLnQEcwV3V0w6aU4lNdeuJrsCQQ7fU_mg/s1600/Xmas1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjouUOYdSpg3sQYPdsVdcrYRO5-uo631KYnjvkRfUPBOXmTUFYeQqcDdBdZVxXG1tS2FcsMdsJL9YW0tv3Xav3G2wWb7IhzInHjq1V-aBlrNpdfLnQEcwV3V0w6aU4lNdeuJrsCQQ7fU_mg/s320/Xmas1.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some examples: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN0F9uAE02q59iTeG-E31yoBpMGUok8s8TPrBJshkJSQFrfFYMUSNYk6uYVLch3_FTlkes-2lVLoFyf2MEvOM-_MWGY3IL3-niz3KMtCvdnb0-1QOGSAvbMveCz-Zv5VQe6aRdSLzAP0Ro/s1600/XMas2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN0F9uAE02q59iTeG-E31yoBpMGUok8s8TPrBJshkJSQFrfFYMUSNYk6uYVLch3_FTlkes-2lVLoFyf2MEvOM-_MWGY3IL3-niz3KMtCvdnb0-1QOGSAvbMveCz-Zv5VQe6aRdSLzAP0Ro/s640/XMas2.jpg" width="288" /></a></div>
<br />
I did this with preschool kids, so I wrote in their answers. If you work with older children, you can have them write their own responses. You can download a copy of the worksheet <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76237240/favorite%20gift.pdf">HERE</a>. <br />
<br />

Here are my <strike>excuses</strike> reasons for that: I'm in the middle of writing progress reports. You know how that is! As if that isn't bad enough, I've also been sick with a cold that just won't go away (and my son and my husband both caught it too). Also, I feel like this has been my busiest school year yet. I hope to write a post on that in the near future. Anyway, you know how Nicole from <a href="http://allisonspeechpeeps.blogspot.com/2013/10/speachy-feedback-linky-party.html" target="_blank">Speech Peeps</a> hosts a monthly S...Peachy Feedback Linky?<br />

On Tuesday, I posted about the book "Acorns Everywhere" and included a free Roll & Cover activity. (You can find that post <a href="http://carriesspeechcorner.blogspot.com/2013/11/book-of-week-acorns-everywhere.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.) I had mentioned that I run a group with an Occupational Therapist. We came up with this activity to promote fine motor objectives after reading "Acorns Everywhere." Well, some of my groups absolutely LOVE doing crafts so I adapted the activity to meet the needs of my students! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii3q_6SsVamf-rNRIAhGwNcra7C0YvkcM4oiCtYm1juz7CkuxPuWD6PYol9XAJIqG3NjugQekg_i-GzvHM2vjwB9AsPWcfPLJfGkqNPC-RcMKOuTR2Q92GluAZpZxE7vthTWC8rCAEXU3G/s1600/Acorn+Lacing.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii3q_6SsVamf-rNRIAhGwNcra7C0YvkcM4oiCtYm1juz7CkuxPuWD6PYol9XAJIqG3NjugQekg_i-GzvHM2vjwB9AsPWcfPLJfGkqNPC-RcMKOuTR2Q92GluAZpZxE7vthTWC8rCAEXU3G/s320/Acorn+Lacing.png" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
I printed the acorn top and bottom on cardstock and had kids color them in and cut them out. Then I punched holes along the adjoining edges and had them lace together with yarn:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyeg0YY3CJuPvlKGbbUxAEf3fpUwZrXkk10Edd8DDTmILVsCfST9Nzce_Q-_7djmhamfAXHGt3NSIUbITtclnpSqNO34V-jvRuevGj-Jv6tNS-Q-z-f_B18kxiX1RhS89tw2MfnEXcKpJ/s1600/Acorn1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFyeg0YY3CJuPvlKGbbUxAEf3fpUwZrXkk10Edd8DDTmILVsCfST9Nzce_Q-_7djmhamfAXHGt3NSIUbITtclnpSqNO34V-jvRuevGj-Jv6tNS-Q-z-f_B18kxiX1RhS89tw2MfnEXcKpJ/s320/Acorn1.jpg" width="260" /></a></div>
<br />
You could modify this activity for pretty much any target:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li><u>Articulation</u>: Write sound on the top portion and have students brainstorm words to write on the bottom.</li>
<li><u>Categorization</u>: Write a category on the top and have students brainstorm members of that category to write on the bottom.</li>
<li><u>Describing</u>: Write a word at the top. Have students write describing words on the bottom. OR...</li>
<li><u>EET</u>: Write a target vocabulary word on the top. Use your EET stickers along the bottom and have students follow the strand to describe the word.</li>
</ul>
<div>
You can find the acorn pattern <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76237240/Acorn%20Lacing.pdf" target="_blank">HERE</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let me know what you think! What other ideas do you have for using the acorns?</div>
<div>

One of the books I'm using this week is "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0545402387/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0545402387&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Acorns Everywhere!</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=carsspecor-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0545402387" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />" by Kevin Sherry. This is a VERY simple book that I picked up from one of the Scholastic flyers for $1.00 last year. There really aren't a lot of words, so this is a great book for having students "read" the pictures!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDrNiCQ8gVK4Dce25bn1FvoQSQydmzC7qVqll_wS4_EP-foiAjrPPINVskQVkFPFgKD7PQT6qztChkWSmAI2zV2EWeVcDYEybtaoaMyvnJgaKuogPwrqc5s5TK-4b-u0qt0Th3zfX8Kaea/s1600/2013-11-07+111.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDrNiCQ8gVK4Dce25bn1FvoQSQydmzC7qVqll_wS4_EP-foiAjrPPINVskQVkFPFgKD7PQT6qztChkWSmAI2zV2EWeVcDYEybtaoaMyvnJgaKuogPwrqc5s5TK-4b-u0qt0Th3zfX8Kaea/s320/2013-11-07+111.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We discussed why the squirrel is burying acorns, whether or not students have seen squirrels gathering food in their yards, as well as the emotions of the different animals we see on the pages. After we were finished, we worked on following directions using acorns (put them in the the cup, give three acorns to Mrs. Smith, put one one your toes, etc.).<br />
<br />
In my next sessions with the kids, we used this Roll & Cover Game to target their individual language and articulation goals:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7HJKa_XclzwhjRVT0CWtpdmV1vYbQA7cTEAs_0mnKQVE0JhG-43Jk15LqSZwmgyNdlDNPqZN_h5VNKR6K5x7RqB16vIJiaGV8jHUYN66LmWoiNe9qRaaAaDHxmdeyobC9ZiOOhJys4YP/s1600/Acorn+Roll+&+Cover.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn7HJKa_XclzwhjRVT0CWtpdmV1vYbQA7cTEAs_0mnKQVE0JhG-43Jk15LqSZwmgyNdlDNPqZN_h5VNKR6K5x7RqB16vIJiaGV8jHUYN66LmWoiNe9qRaaAaDHxmdeyobC9ZiOOhJys4YP/s320/Acorn+Roll+&+Cover.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
If you'd like a copy of this game, you can download it <a href="https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/76237240/Acorn%20Roll%20%26%20Cover.pdf" target="_blank">HERE</a>.<br />

I had every intention to finish all of my Christmas shopping <u>before</u> Thanksgiving this year, but I'm not sure that's going to happen! I digress...I know many of you may be prepping for your therapy sessions and want to include some fun Thanksgiving themed items, so I figured I'd share a round-up of my Thanksgiving posts from last year:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0545230322/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0545230322&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=0545230322&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=carsspecor-20" width="160" /></a></div>
<i><br /></i>I think this book is becoming one of my Halloween Favorites! <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0545230322/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0545230322&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Skeleton Meets the Mummy</a><img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=carsspecor-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0545230322" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> is the story of Sammy the Skeleton. His mother asks him to bring a thermos of soup to his grandmother since it's chilly. Sammy tries to hurry because he's meeting his friend Derek to go Trick-or-Treating, but he is being followed through the woods by a mummy! This book is not too scary for the little ones and is great for having kids make predictions (Did you predict how the book will end???).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=carsspecor-20&o=1&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=ss_til&asins=0545230322" style="height: 240px; width: 120px;"></iframe></div>
<img alt="" border="0" height="1" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=carsspecor-20&l=as2&o=1&a=0545230322" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /><br />
<br />
After reading the story, answering wh- questions, and making predictions, we made mummies:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDkMeZcyRqZvCx5eqHuuUZyMc0CkPBGvCpOXZ08AY0r0upAzmINmOyOS7DwNrslll2GnzL_UNDpky9SKONr8WKC18fVvRKez_EVn8lkO02vn21EE7RRMBh_5u11spFuLzz8HlUUU5pAqs9/s1600/2013-10-30+11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDkMeZcyRqZvCx5eqHuuUZyMc0CkPBGvCpOXZ08AY0r0upAzmINmOyOS7DwNrslll2GnzL_UNDpky9SKONr8WKC18fVvRKez_EVn8lkO02vn21EE7RRMBh_5u11spFuLzz8HlUUU5pAqs9/s400/2013-10-30+11.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
We used a gingerbread template to make the bodies and added strips of masking tape and googly eyes. For this particular group, we worked on following directions and body parts. But you can adapt this craft to any speech target...Kids can earn strips by answering questions, by saying an articulation word, by using a target word in a sentence, etc. You can even write articulation words on the tape strips and have students bring home for carry-over practice!<br />
<br />
I did try to create a mummy using the paper doll pattern done on my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018N7VDC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0018N7VDC&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Cricut</a> (I used the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z43OMC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000Z43OMC&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Paper Doll Dress Up</a> Cartridge), but it really wasn't sturdy enough for the younger kids to use without ripping. The tape tends to stick to the table when you do this craft. When the kids tried to lift it, the pattern ripped. Fortunately, it could be fixed with more tape!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1P3QWXrQSIE3p2BQSJrAc8cze6OLkyv8vMKkOGV71TReNj6AWl78nKTPfDbU0lwzxGdep46WGQO6ovDKi2I7BpYGmOrcuBHhQgUWETa1utMwdua-gn3iqPbxRnB6tSpJnyFpLpff4B3W/s1600/2013-10-30+121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF1P3QWXrQSIE3p2BQSJrAc8cze6OLkyv8vMKkOGV71TReNj6AWl78nKTPfDbU0lwzxGdep46WGQO6ovDKi2I7BpYGmOrcuBHhQgUWETa1utMwdua-gn3iqPbxRnB6tSpJnyFpLpff4B3W/s320/2013-10-30+121.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
I would definitely recommend using the gingerbread shape for younger kids though.<br />
<br />
What do you think? Would you use this book and/or activity in your speech room?<br />

</div>
Over the summer I broke down and bought the <a href="http://www.expandingexpression.com/" target="_blank">Expanding Expression Tool</a>. I had been skeptical about purchasing the EET because I wasn't sure how well my caseload of preschoolers and kindergarteners would get it. We've been going through each bead on the strand one at a time. (If you missed my post about the first bead, Green-Group, you can see it <a href="http://carriesspeechcorner.blogspot.com/2013/09/introducing-eet-expanding-expression.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>. Two weeks ago we did the second bead (Blue-Do), but I never got a chance to write about it before now. This week we're doing the third bead (Eye - What does it look like?). <br />
<br />
<b>Blue-Do:</b><br />
Essentially, with this bead you're working on object functions. We worked on (1) describing the function of common objects that you might find around the house or the classroom, and (2) listing objects you might need to perform a specific task. Here's a preview:<br />
<br />

I used the space-themed game from my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Seasonal-Thematic-Dot-Reinforcers-912332" target="_blank">Seasonal and Thematic Dot Reinforcers</a> to make the activity more fun!<br />

<b><br /></b>
<b>Eye - What Does it Look Like?</b><br />
Not going to lie...I've been doing a lot of ground work in my sessions for this activity. This is an area my kids really struggle with - using more than one attribute to describe. So, we've been doing some fun activities to target using attributes of color, shape, and size to describe. Here are some of them:<br />
<br />

Basically for this craft, I pre-cut shapes (large for bodies, small for eyes, nose, mouth) and used my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018N7VDC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0018N7VDC&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Cricut</a> (<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000Z43OMC/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000Z43OMC&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">Paper Doll Dress Up</a> Cartridge) to make small and large hands and feet. The students had to request their parts using color plus shape and/or size descriptors. <br />
<br />
Now that they have the idea of using those attributes, we are pulling out the cards from my Out of this World Vocabulary packet. Here's a sample:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6E30nsLtqBI5EUwWGbM57uZKGsQsLhTv7JhTJiVaa0VkoXHcgzF9CG7-NQxBccjCF3v2z-vuf4WbG31FgRdZngplEW3-lMFVoeWBe-1ft2LPU_njslnG34gRnopkRj7CIGbn2HxUAzdkF/s1600/Slide27.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6E30nsLtqBI5EUwWGbM57uZKGsQsLhTv7JhTJiVaa0VkoXHcgzF9CG7-NQxBccjCF3v2z-vuf4WbG31FgRdZngplEW3-lMFVoeWBe-1ft2LPU_njslnG34gRnopkRj7CIGbn2HxUAzdkF/s320/Slide27.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
PSSST! I included poster charts for kids to use to help them remember colors, shapes, and sizes:<br />

Since I was creating a packet to accompany the EET, I added a category activity. You can use this activity for category naming and sorting:<br />
<br />

<br />
And there are some game play cards to increase the fun/competition/motivation!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
If you missed my last post, we're creating an EET "caterpillar" as we go through the beads. Here's what it's looking like these days:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<li><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/speech-milo-interactive-storybook/id447014224?mt=8" target="_blank">Speech With Milo Interactive Storybook</a> (Doonan Speech Therapy): I love this app for many reasons. Basically, it's great for my preschool kiddos. They can listen to the story, interact with the pages, and record themselves retelling the events on the page. Plus, it's a bargain at only $1.99!</li>
<li><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/language-adventures/id510822157?mt=8" target="_blank">Language Adventures</a> (Smarty Ears, $14.99): This app/board game can be used to target a variety of objectives and is a ton of fun for the kids!</li>
<li><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/rainbow-sentences/id427578209?mt=8" target="_blank">Rainbow Sentences</a> (Mobile Education Store, $7.99): This is a great app for working on syntax, expanding utterances, and so much more! I wrote a full review on this app that you can read <a href="http://carriesspeechcorner.blogspot.com/2012/12/app-review-giveaway-rainbow-sentences.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.</li>
<li><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/syntax-workout/id619478155?mt=8" target="_blank">Syntax Workout</a> (Virtual Speech Center, $16.99): I have a group of students who will do just about anything for a few minutes of "reward" with this app! They don't mind "working" so that they can work some more with the app! What's not to love about that? This is another app I've reviewed in the past, check it out <a href="http://carriesspeechcorner.blogspot.com/2013/04/app-review-syntax-workout.html" target="_blank">HERE</a>.</li>
<li><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cookie-doodle/id342128086" target="_blank">Cookie Doodle</a> (Shoe the Goose, $0.99): OK, this is technically NOT a language app...but the language potential is endless! Follow the directions of the recipe, sequence the steps, decorate and describe a cookie. There are so many things you can do with this app and the kids just love it!</li>
</ol>

<br />
Have I mentioned that I love Halloween? There are just so many fun things you can do with this theme! This week, we used the book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006JU6XPQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B006JU6XPQ&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">We're Going on a Ghost Hunt</a> by Kris Hirschmann. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRPno2_xhjl1gWy9DJIqW_ypgdMQp4Jq5Ea17DOtxmg6rV1W6p3rKbcb56PXrokuFR-AjToWrdn2g-IEJrDufANq6bxq-KEKwLl0y3p7BqvBeLKEVgnVNQLj_4SDEcO4_8ba-0njwbIPHm/s1600/ZZ1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRPno2_xhjl1gWy9DJIqW_ypgdMQp4Jq5Ea17DOtxmg6rV1W6p3rKbcb56PXrokuFR-AjToWrdn2g-IEJrDufANq6bxq-KEKwLl0y3p7BqvBeLKEVgnVNQLj_4SDEcO4_8ba-0njwbIPHm/s320/ZZ1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As you may have guessed, this book is similar to <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0689815816/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0689815816&linkCode=as2&tag=carsspecor-20">We're Going on a Bear Hunt</a>. However, this story lands you in a haunted house surrounded by ghosts! (But it's not too scary for the little ones). <br />
<br />
While reading the story, I focused on the prepositions (over, under, through, etc.) and had the students illustrate using their hands. After we finished the story, we grabbed my little ghost stuffy and took turns following directions and/or using prepositions:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRxMi6jAtTIsVv-6FUyHeapXQRImB7W_KIh2tOOH9ArpOPg5BBRAFCkXnBpbbaSok0sDH8E6e1_3OAXYi5Pq1-D0TeW7lOk52ZJ6YAkb9rQMAlDYdwCS62EW2B_gatzvkx6_ThjEx1q4Vp/s1600/ZZ2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRxMi6jAtTIsVv-6FUyHeapXQRImB7W_KIh2tOOH9ArpOPg5BBRAFCkXnBpbbaSok0sDH8E6e1_3OAXYi5Pq1-D0TeW7lOk52ZJ6YAkb9rQMAlDYdwCS62EW2B_gatzvkx6_ThjEx1q4Vp/s320/ZZ2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the story was OT time! Our occupational therapist had kids make these chalk rubbing ghosts. Didn't they come out cute? As a bonus, we got to work on the preposition "around" while making these!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6oD2OAA2uOvCw4s21qM7zl-sfam6V377LwcP9Cry-UNFHMBh-7h9RdF6ZXBmoJkaz9pQnb_EOvvZ-o0SstUGg4HO55tjXjeih2K061TIxaLr-RhzW4DdrthuXd8yJ484nulwoV6_Z6Upe/s1600/ZZ3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6oD2OAA2uOvCw4s21qM7zl-sfam6V377LwcP9Cry-UNFHMBh-7h9RdF6ZXBmoJkaz9pQnb_EOvvZ-o0SstUGg4HO55tjXjeih2K061TIxaLr-RhzW4DdrthuXd8yJ484nulwoV6_Z6Upe/s320/ZZ3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

If you want directions for making the chalk rubbings, let me know! What's your favorite Halloween or ghost-themed book?<br />
