by School Zone Publishing Company. This is a little board book that, even though I'm not 100% sure where I got it, I'm glad I did! Board books often lend themselves quite nicely to adaptation with picture symbols and this is a great one for adaptation!
The book is really cute for my preschoolers to target building vocabulary (weather and animals), sentence length, irregular past tense ("came"), WH- questions, prepositions/positional concepts (behind, on, in front of), and story recall. Basically, each page has a different kind of weather and a different animal...
"On a windy day, squirrel came to visit."
"On a cloudy day, cat came to visit."
"On a sunny day, mouse came to visit."
The first time we read it, we take the picture symbols out. Then we typically go back through the book and I have the kids attempt to retell the story and take turns finding the appropriate icons to replace in the book. This is a good time to ask WH- questions (e.g., "Who came to visit on a foggy day?" or "What was the weather like when the snake came to visit?"). We look at the pictures to target prepositions/positional concepts (e.g., The squirrel is on the scarecrow's hand).
I wanted to reinforce the vocabulary in a motivating way, so after the second time through, I use the ChoiceBoard Creator app on my iPad for receptive identification.
By the time we're done with our session, my little guys have heard/used the vocabulary words 3-4 times, practiced saying the sentences, answered questions about the story, and generated phrases/sentences with prepositions. They always enjoy this book and corresponding activities!
